Chain Reaction more

This trail teeters on the edge of being buggy territory.  Very skilled drivers in heavily modified full-size rigs have successfully negotiated it, but few of them escaped body damage.   Many rigs have had big fails here.  This trail begins and ends at the bottom of the rock formations just to the south of Sand Hollow State Park.  While not as high rated as Arrowhead Canyon in the next canyon to the east, it still has plenty of adrenaline factor for buggies and heavily modified full body rigs.

Scenery

Pause to take in views of Sand Hollow Reservoir immediately to the south with Zion Park in the distance.  The usually snow-capped Pine Valley Mountains are to the west, and Hurricane Cliffs are to the east.

Surface

Slickrock canyons, wedges, and ledges.  Some sand hills.

Trail Details

Chain reaction begins in a sandy wash by Sand Hollow Reservoir. The first obstacle is one gigantic waterfall.  This obstacle is buggy only.  The waterfall is easily bypassed by entering into the wash a little further up. Chain Reaction consists of Lower Chain and Upper Chain.  Lower chain follows this wash.  It is full of obstacles that can get ugly real fast if you are not careful.  The wash narrows into a tricky series of falls and around a bend that requires maneuvering your rig by a massive boulder.  Then it opens up and you begin making your way out of the wash.  To reach Upper Chain, the driver must climb a very slick and vertical hill.  At the top, Upper Chain begins, leading you along the ridge above the wash. Upper chain presents just as many intimidating challenges to both the rig and its driver.  You will almost always receive some "love bites" from the rocks.  Rigs need to be, at a minimum, locked front and rear with at least 35" tires. Chain Reaction has an extremely high possibility of body damage and/or mechanical breakdown.

Joint Effort more

Joint Effort starts with a sandy drive up a wide wash, then the fun begins!  This trail has many steep slickrock climbs and dropoffs, with lots of off camber to add more challenge.  Rollovers are common.  There are a few slot canyons that add to the fun.  At one point, the trail crosses the Double Sammy trail in a narrow canyon with sandy bottom. Each consecutive obstacle will be increasingly difficult, so tighten those belts, and be ready for some fun!

Scenery

If you take a little time to catch your breath between the obstacles, you can look behind you and see beautiful views of Sand Hollow Reservoir with Zion Park in the distance.  You can also see the Pine Valley Mountains.

Surface

Slickrock walls and sandy bottoms

Trail Details

This trail is a series of big obstacles, with each one more difficult than the last.  The short distance between the major obstacles has some challenges to keep you entertained.  Once you make it through, there is a trip down the sand dunes to clear out the pipes.

The Fallen more

::: The Fallen :::

This trail was built by a couple local Veterans who wanted to give back to their fallen brothers and sisters, with obstacles dedicated to fallen soldiers from each of the American Conflicts. The main trail is rated a HARD 8 with a couple obstacles at a 9 rating. However there is a shadow trail rated 6 right next to the main trail. If drivers and riders want to give certain obstacles a shot, they can jump in or out of the trail at any point. 10 plaques at 10 obstacles, The Fallen also has a memorial for anyone wishing to leave memories of their friends or family.

Scenery

The scenery is spectacular from almost every part of this run.  To the south, there are slickrock canyons with hoodoos and many rock formations.  Sand Hollow Reservoir lies just to the north, with Zion Park in the background.  The lower Hurricane Sand Dunes are just to the east, with Hurricane Cliffs in the background.  In the winter time, the Pine Valley Mountains to the west are usually capped with snow.

Surface

Most of the trail is on the slickrock, with some parts crossing sandy canyon bottoms.  The access and return routes are on bumpy sand trail.  The route from the top of the slickrock is via the Hurricane Sand Dunes, mostly downhill with a few dune climbs.

Trail Details

The Fallen has obstacles dedicated to fallen service members from the follow conflicts: World War 1, World War 2, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Desert Storm, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and a special obstacle dedicated to a specific service member from Utah that was also a wheeler. This trail can be fun for everyone with all sorts of skill levels and vehicles.

Nasty Half more

Nasty Half is just that--nasty. This trail has earned its name and is full of intense climbs and steep waterfalls. It begins in a wash to the south of the dunes at Sand Hollow Reservoir.  The close proximity to the dunes creates a combined hazard of sand upon the slick red sandstone, challenging the skill of any driver.

Short mix of canyon, sand, and slots that can take all day to get through.

Scenery

Awesome scenery surrounds this trail.  The Hurricane Sand Dunes are along the east edge of Nasty Half.  Sand Hollow Reservoir is to the south, with Zion in the background.   view to the south is... the next big rock with sand on it!

Surface

Slickrock with sand.  Slot canyons and wide sandy canyon bottoms with steep sandhill climbs.

Trail Details

Nasty Half starts off with a tall vertical wall and doesn't let up until you find yourself flooring your way up the side of a sandy hill to resurface on the dunes. There are several undulating slots that require spanning and pose a big challenge trying to stay up and not tip over.

Many rigs have been known as "that rig" (you know, the one that is always breaking down) because there is almost always a guarantee of body damage and or mechanical failure. Rigs should be equipped with 2 lockers and a minimum of 37" tires.
